Defender rubbishes exit talks

Middlesbrough defender David Wheater has said he wants to stay at The Riverside beyond his current contract. Wheater's future at Boro has been far from certain in recent weeks, with numerous reports suggesting he could leave the club. The England Under 21 international still has one year left on his current deal but is yet to discuss any extension. Wheater insists he is happy with Boro and has moved to quash exit talk by saying he is ready to commit to the Teessiders beyond his current contract. "I have always been clear that I wouldn't ask for a transfer, it's up to the manager or the chairman to decide if they want to keep me," he told the Northern Echo. "I will not be asking for a move. I am here to stay." He added: "I have another season left on my contract and expect to be here for at least another season."
