Liam Ridgewell believes team-mate Joe Hart should be England's No.1 goalkeeper at the World Cup.

Defender hoping keeper will still be at Birmingham next season

Liam Ridgewell believes Joe Hart should be England's No.1 at the World Cup and hopes the goalkeeper stays at Birmingham City next season. Hart has impressed during his campaign on loan at Birmingham from Manchester City and was named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year. His form for Blues is expected to be rewarded with a place in England's squad for the World Cup and Ridgewell feels the young keeper should start the first game against the USA on 12th June. Ridgewell said: "Joe is a superb keeper. I am sure he will go to the World Cup.

Great presence

"He is a great keeper with a great presence. "If a team gets through you, they've still got to beat Joe and he has been fantastic. "On form, he is the best English keeper at present. Definitely. I don't think anyone is playing as well as him. "It would be no surprise to me if he started in the World Cup to be honest and he wouldn't let England down." Ridgewell is hoping that Birmingham can retain the services of Hart for another season, although Shay Given's dislocated shoulder may prevent another deal. He said: "If we can keep hold of Joe for another year, it will be a bonus for us. "The whole of our team has done well this season, back in the Premier League for the first time. "But Joe has been fantastic, has made crucial saves and earned us plenty of points."
