Portsmouth have agreed a deal to sign Stoke defender Ibrahima Sonko on a season-long loan.

Loan move subject to Football League approval

Portsmouth have agreed a deal to sign Stoke defender Ibrahima Sonko on a season-long loan. The cash-strapped Championship club, who are operating under a transfer embargo, are waiting for the deal to be approved by the Football League. Sonko has struggled to establish himself at the Britannia Stadium after arriving from Reading in August 2008 and spent last season on loan at Hull City. Pompey boss Steve Cotterill was delighted to land the experienced defender and believes he will be a valuable addition to the squad.

Fantastic job

"He's a big, strong and very powerful defender. I've followed him for a while and I thought he did a fantastic job at Reading," Cotterill told the club's official website. "He's been a bit unlucky during his time at Stoke and hasn't had too many first-team opportunities, although he did spend time on loan at Hull last season. He just needs to get back playing football. "I spoke to him before we flew out here to the USA and hopefully he'll be able to come and join us on tour. "The deal is done and we're just waiting for the OK from the Football League."
