Croatian set for Germany switch

Skysports.com understands Aston Villa target Mario Mandzukic has joined Steve McClaren's Wolfsburg. Villa were reported to be interested in signing Dinamo Zagreb striker Mandzukic as Martin O'Neill looks to bolster his attacking options. Mandzukic is regarded as one of the best young players to emerge from Croatia in recent years having scored 42 goals in 81 appearances for Zagreb and he also scored in Croatia's 4-1 defeat to England in September 2008. However, it appears Wolfsburg have beaten Villa and a host of other clubs to land the highly-rated 24-year-old. Mandzukic's agent, Ivan Cvjetkovic, has confirmed Villa were interested in the forward, but that Wolfsburg have managed to lure him to Germany. "Aston Villa were interested in Mario, but he has gone to Wolfsburg," Cvjetkovic told skysports.com. "Mario has had a medical at Wolfsburg and he has signed a contract. "Wolfsburg are an ambitious club and the Bundesliga is a big league and Mario is looking forward to playing there." The arrival of Mandzukic is sure to fuel speculation that Manchester City target Edin Dzeko could be on his way out of Wolfsburg.
