Southend have swooped to sign Peterborough midfielder Josh Simpson on an initial one-month loan deal.

Midfielder eventually due to move to Roots Hall until January

Southend United have swooped to sign Peterborough United midfielder Josh Simpson on an initial one-month loan deal. Simpson joined Peterborough from Histon last season, but has been informed he is surplus to requirements at London Road. He impressed Southend during a recent trial and is now set to become Paul Sturrock's 15th signing since taking charge of the League Two club. The 23-year-old will move to Roots Hall for an initial month, but Peterborough director of football Barry Fry confirmed a deal until January has been agreed. "Josh Simpson has signed an initial one-month loan deal with Southend United whilst they wait for their transfer embargo to be lifted, but he will stay until January once the loan can be extended," Fry told skysports.com. Another player who has featured recently for Southend is Rene Howe, but Fry revealed the Shrimpers have not shown an interest in signing the striker. He added: "Rene Howe had an hour on Saturday for Southend, but nothing has happened since then and he has gone on to play for another club, Rushden & Diamonds, on Tuesday night. "He is just getting some games under his belt really to improve his match fitness."
