McEveley and O'Connor drafted in to cover injury problems

Scotland manager Craig Levein has called up Jay McEveley and Garry O'Connor for the Euro 2012 qualifiers against Lithuania and Liechtenstein. Birmingham striker O'Connor comes in after Chris Iwelumo pulled out with a hamstring injury, while concerns have also surfaced over Steven Fletcher's fitness for the opening game in Kaunas on Friday night. Barnsley defender McEveley has been selected in the wake of the injuries to full-backs Lee Wallace and Kevin McNaughton on Monday. Levein's hope and aim is to have an experienced nucleus to his team for the Euro 2012 campaign, when Scotland will aim to reach the finals of a major tournament for the first time since the 1998 World Cup. The European qualifiers also represent the first competitive international matches for the former Dundee United boss, having previously taken charge of friendlies against Czech Republic and Sweden. Levein recently described the friendlies as a 'pain in the backside' after seeing his plans severely disrupted by injuries, but he has said that there is a 'degree of understanding' on the behalf of players and clubs for competitive matches. Scotland will be desperate to get off to a winning start against Lithuania before Liechtenstein visit Hampden Park next Tuesday. Fixtures against the Czechs and the daunting prospect of world and European champions Spain then wait in the future of Group I.
