Gers assistant hoping striker pens new deal

Rangers assistant manager Ally McCoist remains hopeful that star striker Kenny Miller will commit his future to the SPL champions. The striker, who celebrates his 31st birthday on Thursday, has been the club's stand-out performer this season with an impressive 20 goals to his name. However, the former Celtic marksman is out of contract at the end of the season and could walk away from the Ibrox giants on a free transfer in the summer. Talks between both parties are ongoing and McCoist, who could succeed Walter Smith as manager next term, would love for Miller to commit to Gers.

Delighted

"We would all be delighted if he stayed," said McCoist. "I know his representative and [chief executive] Martin Bain have had lengthy discussions. "It's not over the line yet but we are very, very hopeful that Kenny will be staying here and signing a new contract. "You have a word here and there but it's only fair to let Kenny make his own mind up. "He's got a young family and decisions to make and it will be his decision only but hopefully he stays."
Signed
One player who is staying with Rangers is Steven Naismith after he signed a contract that keeps him at the club until May 2015. McCoist has been thrilled with the forward's form this term and believes his best years are still ahead of him. "I'm absolutely thrilled," he continued. "Steven is a great kid and he has come on in leaps and bounds this season. "It's a real boost for everybody at the club that he's decided to extend his contract. He had a tough time when he came here and got a serious injury. "You want all your good players to be tied up and to re-sign, certainly the younger ones coming through, and Naisy certainly fits that bill."
