Argentine striker could miss remainder of the season

Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain is to undergo an operation on the back problem which has kept him out of action since November. The Argentina international is suffering with a slipped disc and has been sidelined for the best part of two months as a result. Real are desperate to get the prolific frontman back on the field as soon as possible and feel surgery is now the only option available to them. The Spanish giants revealed on Tuesday that their latest MRI scans showed 'some improvement' and a 'reduction of the inflammation'. However, they added: "The persistence of pain and of the slipped disc moved experts to advise surgery as the next step. This decision has been accepted by the player, his family and the club." Real are now set to decide within the next 48 hours where Higuain will go under the knife. The news comes as a major blow to Jose Mourinho, who admitted on Sunday that the absence of his star striker would force him to re-construct his team. It is unclear how long the 23-year-old will be sidelined for, but it is feared that he could miss the remainder of the season.
