Latics boss delighted to still have winger on his books

Roberto Martinez believes Charles N'Zogbia's presence at Wigan underlines the club's ambition. The Latics have struggled to retain the services of key men in the past, with the likes of Nathan Ellington, Jimmy Bullard and Antonio Valencia having slipped through their grasp. They were determined to avoid seeing N'Zogbia go a similar way during the January transfer window, with the Frenchman attracting plenty of interest. Their efforts paid off, with even a late bid from Newcastle unable to lure the winger away from the DW Stadium. Martinez is delighted to have seen the club, who find themselves in a basement battle again this season, keep their prized asset out of the clutches of a rival.

Stronger

The Spaniard hopes that stance is a sign of things to come, with it important that the club are able to fend off advances if they are to improve in the future. "Our intention is to finish the season with a stronger squad," said Martinez. "We want to get players back from injury and we didn't want to lose our prize asset. "I know the fans have been disappointed in the past at losing players at key stages."
