Alex McLeish admits leading striker Darren Bent was left a 'bit frustrated' following Aston Villa's 0-0 draw at home to Wolves.
Villa maintained their unbeaten start to the season following the derby stalemate and looked the more dangerous team in the second half.
However, clear-cut chances were scarce as Bent, aside from looping a late header on to the roof of the net, was devoid of regular service.
McLeish also praised the tactics of his opposite number Mick McCarthy as the result allowed Wolves to move to the top of the Premier League table.
Good positions
"I felt second half we had full control of the game and we flashed a few balls across the face of goal," McLeish told
Sky Sports 2.
"I think a few shooting opportunities, even in the first half, we reneged on, and in the second half we miskicked or pulled our shots.
"Gabby (Agbonlahor) had one, Charles N'Zogbia had two or three and we were getting in good positions.
"Maybe we were not getting enough service to the main man again Benty, but he's a bit frustrated. It only takes one chance, and he so very nearly won it for us.
"Mick made changes and the defensive midfielders he brought on took the sting out of the game and that stopped the momentum. It was a good choice of tactic by Mick."
After a lacklustre opening 45 minutes, Villa enjoyed a dominant spell in the second period and McLeish outlined the changes he made at the interval.
He added: "We said there were one or two things troubling us and we tightened up on that which made the difference and made us much more solid.
"The players went up a gear and really got on top of the Wolves players. We never allowed them a minute's rest and it gave us a bit of the edge and more of the territory."
