Potters not allowed to bring in Chelsea striker on loan

Stoke have been denied in their bid to land Romelu Lukaku on loan after learning that such a move would contravene Premier League rules. It was reported earlier on Tuesday that the Potters were in talks with Chelsea over the possibility of a temporary switch. It was thought that such an agreement could benefit both sides, with Stoke eager to bolster their attacking options and Chelsea keen for Lukaku to gain experience of English football. However, it has now been confirmed that the Belgian teenager would not be allowed to move to the Britannia Stadium. Premier League rules state that a player bought by one club cannot be loaned to another in the same transfer window. Lukaku only arrived at Stamford Bridge in a big-money deal from Anderlecht this month and made his Premier League debut against Norwich on Saturday. The 18-year-old will now have to fight for a regular place in the Blues side as manager Andre Villas-Boas has plenty of attacking resources at his disposal. Fernando Torres, Nicolas Anelka and Daniel Sturridge are also competing for places up front, along with Didier Drogba, who is expected to head out to the African Cup of Nations in January.
