Peruvian injured in freak accident on flight

Hamburg striker Paolo Guerrero is fighting to be fit for this weekend's clash against Werder Bremen after panicking during a flight and picking up a leg injury. The Peruvian, who has a well-documented phobia of flying, suffered the problem on a flight to Switzerland for a friendly match on Saturday. Guerrero became so tense on the flight that he sustained a thigh muscle injury and was left out of the team that drew 2-2 against FC Lucerne. Coach Michael Oenning expects the hitman to make a speedy recovery.

Fear

"We know about Paolo's fear of flying," he said. "He became cramped up in his seat and suffered a stiffening of the muscles. "I think Paolo will get fit quickly and should play at the weekend against Werder Bremen." Guerrero, who finished as the top scorer at this summer's Copa America, delayed his return to Germany from Peru several times early last year because he could not face boarding an aircraft. He got on and off a plane on four occasions in Lima before finally boarding at the fifth attempt. Since that incident, the striker has had treatment and was thought to be mastering the problem.
