David Moyes does not expect James McFadden to play for Everton too soon but has been impressed by what he has seen in training.
The Scotland international joined the Toffees on a free transfer earlier this week, signing a short-term deal until the end of the season.
Moyes will look at his contract situation again next summer but has challenged the 28-year-old forward to make the most of his opportunity.
McFadden will not be considered for Sunday's clash with Fulham as he is still regaining fitness after a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a knee injury.
But he is working hard to get back into peak condition and Moyes hopes it will not be too long before he can be unleashed.
Matured
"He has had a bad knee injury which kept him out for over a year," said the Everton manager at his pre-match press conference.
"I wouldn't be expecting to see him playing too soon but he has got his first 45 minutes of football under his belt this week for the reserves.
"He has been out for a long time but he has looked good in training and we will try to get him back quickly. Hopefully it won't be too long because we want him around the squad.
"He is here for the season and if he does well we will look at things again.
"This is a deal that helps both parties. He has looked good in training and he has matured."
McFadden spent five years at Goodison Park earlier in his career before joining Birmingham in 2008.
