Gus Poyet is hoping he can secure the services of loan star Steve Harper until January, with a three-month agreement his original plan.
The experienced goalkeeper joined the Seagulls on a month-long deal from Newcastle at the end of October.
He has made four appearances during his time at the Amex Stadium, keeping two clean sheets.
Harper will, however, see his current deal expire after Brighton's next Championship outing against south coast rivals Southampton on 19th November.
The 36-year-old will be expected to return to Newcastle at that point, but Poyet is hoping an agreement can be reached that will allow the veteran shot-stopper to remain where he is.
Negotiations
He told
The Argus: "The idea in the beginning was it would be up to January. For some reason, in the last few hours of negotiations, it changed to only a month.
"I don't like a month because players get used to how you play then go back, so I was as surprised as anyone.
"I was convinced it was for almost three months. It's very difficult to explain the reasons but it happened.
"I know it is difficult when somebody is on a short loan and they are a long way from home, so there are things we need to manage. We want the players to be happy here."
