Scot says Manchester United midfielders know what their role is

Darren Fletcher believes Manchester United would already have signed a replacement for Paul Scholes if one could be found. Scholes brought the curtain down on a glittering career at the end of last season and a string of names were mooted as a possible successor for the midfield maestro. Wesley Sneijder, Luka Modric and Samir Nasri were among those linked with summer moves to Old Trafford, but Sir Alex Ferguson opted to invest in other areas of his squad. Many United supporters feel the champions are paying for the inability to bring in a fresh face and the lack of creativity will eventually prove the difference when major trophies are being handed out next spring. However, Fletcher would not adopt such a pessimistic stance as he genuinely feels trying to find someone to fill Scholes' boots is a complete waste of time.

One of the best

"We can't replace Paul Scholes, it is as simple as that," said the Scotland captain. "If there was someone I am sure he would be here. "You are talking about one of the best players ever to play for Manchester United." Anderson, Michael Carrick and Ryan Giggs are among the varied options at Ferguson's disposal and Fletcher believes the task of United's midfield at present is to create space for the flair men ahead of them. "As midfielders we know what our job is and how we affect games," he said. "Maybe we are not noticed but we have quality players in advanced positions. Our job is to supply them."
