Former Liverpool man set for Keepmoat Stadium loan

Skysports.com understands Doncaster are closing in on a deal to sign former Liverpool midfielder Damien Plessis. The Frenchman could be the latest high-profile signing to arrive at the Keepmoat Stadium with agent Willie McKay already bringing the likes of Pascal Chimbonda, El Hadji Diouf, Herita Ilunga and Habib Beye to the club. The Championship club are believed to have agreed a loan deal with Panathinaikos to bring Plessis to South Yorkshire for the rest of the season. Plessis, who played in the same Lyon youth team as Hatem Ben Arfa and Karim Benzema, joined Liverpool in the summer of 2007 after the Reds beat a host of clubs to his signature. However, the 23-year-old saw his first-team chances at Anfield limited and he joined Panathinaikos in the summer of 2010. Doncaster are now set to offer the powerful midfielder a second chance to impress in England with Plessis hoping to use the switch to the Keepmoat as a spingboard to winning a move back to the Premier League. "We have lined up a deal to sign Damien Plessis from Panathinaikos on loan," McKay told skysports.com. "Because of the financial situation in Greece we have been lucky enough to agree a deal with Panathinaikos to sign a player of the calibre of Damien. "He played in a fantastic youth team at Lyon and was regarded as one of the best young prospects in France before he joined Liverpool. "Unfortunately it did not work out for Damien at Liverpool, but he is a quality player and has played in the Champions League. "He is still only 23 and we believe he will be a valuable addition to the squad at Doncaster and will prove a massive success in the Championship. "Again we are only paying £2,000 a week for the player with Panathinaikos covering the remainder of his salary. "Damien wants to get back to the Premiership and we will give him that chance at Doncaster to put himself in the shop window."
