Fulham boss hopes his captain will stay beyond the summer

Fulham manager Martin Jol has revealed that the club are looking to retain the services of captain Danny Murphy. The midfielder is out of contract at the end of the season and is believed to be talking to QPR over a potential coaching role at the club. The 35-year-old has been with the West London club since moving from Tottenham in 2007 and has made over 150 appearances for the club. Jol believes that the Cottagers can keep Murphy and the player will resist the temptations of moving to their city-rivals.

Problem

Jol said: "It depends on the club that is coming in. At Spurs I had the same situation with Berbatov, if it is a big club then maybe you have a little problem. "He is a free agent and he can do what he wants to do, but we talk to him as well. He could do a similar (coaching) thing here." Meanwhile, Jol is also hoping that Clint Dempsey will stay with the club after scoring 22 goals this season. The United States international has another year remaining on his contract after joining the club in 2007. Jol said: "If you have a year to go it is hard to keep someone. If you want to keep him on a contract until it will finish that will be a difficult situation for him and for us. "That is the main priority I want to focus on. Can we keep him? We have made him a good offer and we have to wait and see until the summer. "But I told him yesterday that I would love him to stay here at least as long as I am here. "He's had some season. He can score from all angles in the box and he can even score when he is not playing up front. I am very happy he is there. We are talking to him and hopefully we will get it right."
