Blades keeper fully focused on clinching runners-up spot

Sheffield United goalkeeper Steve Simonsen says the Blades remain determined to secure automatic promotion to the Championship this season. Danny Wilson's side face competition from cross-city rivals Sheffield Wednesday to join Charlton in sealing an automatic return to the second tier. United hold a one point advantage over the Owls with two games remaining after suffering their first defeat in 10 games at MK Dons on Saturday, but they also possess a significantly better goal difference. Simonsen says he remains fully focused on clinching the runners-up spot rather than entering the play-off lottery.

Frustration

"Obviously, it would be a slight frustration to dip into the play-offs at this stage because we've done ever so well throughout the season," the 33-year-old told Sky Sports. "We'll do it any which way we have to really and if that means going through the play-offs so be it and we'll just take the form we've shown since the turn of the year into them. "A few weeks back we were not looking to settle in second though because our aim was to catch Charlton up and win the division outright. "Obviously, they didn't slip up as much as we'd have liked, but our focus remains the same, to keep targeting things above rather than looking over our shoulders at those chasing us."
