Stoke winger will face no action over nightclub claims

Stoke winger Jermaine Pennant will face no action over claims he assaulted a woman in a nightclub. The Potters player was arrested after the woman complained she had been attacked in the Circle Bar in Manchester city centre. He was bailed pending inquiries but the probe against him has been dropped. A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "No further action will be taken against a man arrested following an assault in Manchester. "Police received reports a woman was assaulted at a nightclub on Barton Arcade, Manchester, at approximately 3.30am on 29 April 2012. "Police have cancelled the bail of a 29-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of section 47 assault."

Driving charges

At 5.20am the same morning, Pennant, 29, of Dunham Road, Altrincham, Cheshire, was involved in a car crash and charged with drink-driving, driving while disqualified and having no insurance. Police were called to Cross Street in Sale, Greater Manchester, to reports that Pennant's white BMW had been involved in a collision with a silver Audi. The driver of the Audi was taken to hospital and treated for a minor back injury. Pennant is due to appear next week at Trafford Magistrates' Court to answer the driving charges.
