Defender targets title bid and wants Di Matteo to land job

David Luiz does not accept the view that Chelsea are a lucky team and hopes Roberto Di Matteo will be given the chance to remain as manager. The Blues have been criticised at times this season and only finished sixth in the Premier League, but they emerged with two major trophies after winning the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League. Luiz is delighted to have enjoyed such success and has now challenged his team-mates to become more consistent next term and compete for top spot in the Premier League. "Our titles have silenced many mouths because people had buried us and had no confidence in our results," the Brazilian defender said in The People. "Nobody gave us the titles we have won - all our rivals fought 100 per cent. I do not accept that Chelsea was a team with luck because it is not true. "Chelsea are obliged to fight for the Premier League title in the next campaign. This is our challenge and obligation."

Sacrifice

Roman Abramovich has yet to decide who will be handed the managerial reins on a permanent basis but Luiz would love to see Di Matteo get the job after making such an impact. Di Matteo was only named interim boss until the end of the season following the departure of Andre Villas-Boas, who Luiz says also deserves some credit. "I insist that AVB is not a bad coach. He has played a part in the success of winning our titles," said Luiz. "The players have worked very united with Di Matteo, though. "He demanded us to fight more, show total discipline in our tactics and make much sacrifice. "We want Di Matteo to continue, but the decision is in the hands of the owner."
