Ipswich Town manager Paul Jewell wants to secure Lee Martin on a new contract, but will not let the midfielder leave the club for nothing.
Martin is in the final year of his current deal at Portman Road after signing a four-year contract upon his arrival from Manchester United in 2009.
The 25-year-old established himself as a regular under Jewell last season and remains an important part of his plans for the coming campaign.
Jewell has confirmed that Ipswich owner Marcus Evans has held talks with Martin's representatives regarding a new deal with the Championship club.
However, Jewell suggested that if no agreement is reached before the close of the transfer window, he will look to offload Martin to ensure Ipswich receive a fee.
"The owner has spoken with his agent," Jewell told the East Anglian Daily Times. "We are trying to tie Lee down with a new contract in the near future.
"We want to keep Lee Martin but if it is not sorted out in the near future, we cannot afford to let contracts run down."
