December to be crunch month for French full-back

Eric Abidal has been offered cause for optimism by medical professionals as he continues his recovery from a liver transplant. The Barcelona defender underwent major surgery in April and has always been aware that the procedure could bring an end to his professional career. He has, however, been included in Barca's 25-man squad for this season's UEFA Champions League campaign. The Catalan giants are hoping that the French full-back will make a full recovery and be back in contention by the end of the year.

Medication

Doctors at Hospital Clinic de Barcelona admit December will be a big month for Abidal, as he faces a possible make or break decision. They are pleased with the progress he has made to this point, with his weight improving steadily, but are keen to point out that the 32-year-old may be forced to hang up his boots. "Abidal has responded positively to the medication and his body has recuperated well," Dr Juan Carlos Garcia Valdecasas told Sport. "It is not impossible that he could continue to play professional football, but the most important thing is that Eric enjoys an excellent quality of life."
