Gerard Deulofeu v Dele Alli: The key battle in Everton v Tottenham

Deulofeu v Alli

Who will come out on top when two of the Premier League's brightest young talents meet at Goodison Park?

Everton's Gerard Deulofeu will come up against Tottenham's Dele Alli in the first Super Sunday of 2016 - but who will inspire their side to a successful start to the New Year?

Deulofeu's return to Everton could hardly have gone better this season.

After a successful loan spell two seasons ago, the winger made a permanent move from Barcelona for £4.3m in the summer. His tally of seven Premier League assists can only be bettered by Mesut Ozil and Kevin De Bruyne. Six of his seven assists have been for Romelu Lukaku, which is the joint most assists to a single player in the Premier League this season.

Player Club Assists
Mesut Ozil Arsenal 16
Kevin de Bruyne Man City 8
Gerard Deulofeu Everton 7

Mesut Ozil Olivier Giroud Arsenal 6
Marc Albrighton Riyad Mahrez Leicester 5
Troy Deeney Odion Ighalo Watford 5
Riyad Mahrez Jamie Vardy Leicester 4
Romelu Lukaku Arouna Kone Everton 4

His influence on Everton's performances have been greater away from Goodison Park, though. In his last six away appearances he has made six assists which has won Roberto Martinez's men six points. At Goodison Park his tally of one assist and two goals are yet to win a point.

Since making his first home start of the season in the Merseyside derby on October 4, Deulofeu has made the second most dribbles at home in the Premier League behind Crystal Palace's Wilfried Zaha.

His influence on Everton is illustrated by the fact that 42 per cent of Everton's attacks originate from the right hand side since the start of October with only 29 per cent of their attacks down the left.

Alli is proof that a year is a long time in football. The midfielder scored in his first game of 2015 as MK Dons' drew 2-2 with Crawley in League One. Since then he has won promotion from League One, joined Tottenham for £5m, made his Premier League and England debuts and become a regular in Mauricio Pochettino's side.

The 19-year-old all-action midfielder has made more appearances in the Premier League than any other teenager this season and has also played the most minutes. He has made more assists and scored more goals than all the other teenagers to have played in the Premier League this season combined.

Dele Alli Tottenham 1243
Brendan Galloway Everton 1223
Joe Gomez Liverpool 438

Alli has put in some strong performances away from White Hart Lane. In Tottenham's last three Premier League away games he has scored two goals and made one assist, earning the north Londoners three points in the process. Overall three of his four Premier League goals have been scored on the road.

His involvement in seven Premier League goals this season can only be bettered for Tottenham by Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen. He's been involved in more than £30m record-signing Erik Lamela and Belgium internationals Nacer Chaldi and Mousa Dembele.

Everton will be hoping that a strong performance by Deulofeu and his team-mates will bring Roberto Martinez his first home win since November 21 - but they'll have to contain Alli and a Tottenham team who have lost just twice all season to do that.
