West Brom boss Tony Pulis discussed their tactical change against Hull before addressing the January transfer window

Tony Pulis said West Brom must spend wisely during the January transfer window as they look to build on their promising position in the Premier League.

West Brom came from a goal down to beat Hull 3-1 on Monday - their second win from a losing position in just three days.

The victory leaves West Brom eighth in the table, and Pulis admitted his side are in a good position to strengthen further.

One such addition could be Manchester United midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin, although West Brom are yet to table a second bid after their initial £18m offer was turned down.

"We have to try and maintain this and also bring a couple of players in. We're working hard behind the scenes to bring a couple of players in," Pulis told Sky Sports.

"I've been here nearly two years and the club has improved, but it has been slow.

"That's what happens at clubs like this. We're not going to throw a load of money away and do something stupid which puts the club at risk - we're going to do it within the budget.

Mike Phelan says Hull didn’t defend second half set pieces properly as they lost 3-1 to West Brom

"There's money there from the summer which we didn't spend. And we have to spend it right.

"The players we want are difficult to attract to our football club, but we're doing our best. It's important that we try and bring in quality rather than quantity."

Second-half goals from Chris Brunt, Gareth McAuley and James Morrison helped West Brom move onto 29 points, their second-best haul in the Premier League after 20 games.

It could have been different though, and it was a case of deja vu for West Brom as they headed into the break 1-0 down, just as they did against Southampton two days before.

And while Hal Robson-Kanu's stunner proved to be the difference against the Saints, it was costly Hull errors which handed West Brom the three points this time out.

"We're pleased," Pulis added. "It was similar to Southampton as we didn't play very well in the first half. Tactically, with their shape, the Hull players were in front of us.

"We changed it just before half-time and at the break we talked about doing different jobs to what we're used to - in terms of matching them up.

"We were playing with a flat four and getting caught. They outnumbered us in areas and were causing us problems.

"We needed to stop them playing and see if we could wrestle away their superiority, and get Morrison and Fletcher more into the game."
