Liverpool are missing a “character” like Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher in their line-up, according to former Reds midfielder Luis Garcia.
The Spaniard believes Jurgen Klopp has assembled a talented team but is lacking in leaders on the pitch compared to the side that lifted the Champions League in 2005.
Liverpool are currently third in the Premier League table and on course with six matches remaining to claim a Champions League berth for the first time since 2014.
And Garcia, who was part of the side skippered by Gerrard who lifted the European Cup, believes captain Jordan Henderson is doing a good job but the side need a player with world class leadership qualities.
"This Liverpool side lacks players with character like Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher, or even Kenny Dalglish in the past," he said.
"We don't see leaders like them much on the pitch. We have amazing talent like (Philippe) Coutinho, (Roberto) Firmino, (Adam) Lallana, (Daniel) Sturridge, so much talent.
"I haven't been in that dressing room but I am sure a Steven Gerrard-like character would be amazing. He would lead the team when things were not going well."
Gerrard made 710 appearances for his boyhood club during a 17-year spell at Anfield and returned to his roots in February as part of the coaching set-up at the academy.
The former England midfielder announced this week he will be taking charge of the club's Under-18 side next season.
Garcia also stressed it was vital Klopp's side finish in the top four to keep hold of their best players and to improve the squad.
"If Liverpool qualify, I'm sure all the top players will stay. Because it's a special club. Playing Champions League for Liverpool, it's very special," the former Barcelona player added.
"Champions League qualification is very important. Not because of the players who stay but because of the players who want to come. Top players want to play Champions League, all of them."
