Swansea captain Federico Fernandez says his side lost their chance in their bid for Premier League survival.

Swansea's seven-season stay in the top flight is under threat following Tuesday's 1-0 defeat to relegation rivals Southampton at the Liberty Stadium.

Should Huddersfield collect a point from their final two games - away to Chelsea on Wednesday night or at home to Arsenal on Sunday - then Swansea would effectively be down, even if they beat already-relegated Stoke at home on the final day.

Southampton - who entertain champions Manchester City on Sunday - now have three points more with a goal difference advantage of nine going into the final afternoon of the season.

"It is bitterly disappointing, absolutely," said Swansea captain Fernandez. "We know we lose our chance.

"It doesn't depend on us now - and we are waiting for a miracle.

"We have to win our last game, but we are waiting on other results also."

Swansea seemed on course for survival after Carlos Carvalhal engineered a dramatic turnaround following his arrival at the end of 2017.

Having been bottom of the table and five points from safety when Carvalhal succeeded the sacked Paul Clement, five wins in nine games took Swansea up to 13th.

But Swansea have not won since a 4-1 home defeat of West Ham on March 3.

In the eight matches since, Swansea have scored only twice - and not once in the last four games when they have failed to pick up a point.

"A lot of things have gone wrong," Fernandez added. "We can't win the games, we have had chances to take points before this game and we didn't.

"Overall, the season has been up and down, a struggle for us."

Alongside Huddersfield, Swansea are the lowest scorers in the Premier League, with just 27 goals from their 37 games.

"When we don't score it's difficult and we lose confidence," Fernandez said. "We tried on the pitch and we have one more game to finish properly.

"We will try to get three points and we will see what happens."
