FA responds to Mido criticism

The FA has vowed to take action against anyone found guilty of racist chanting.

Governing body keen to stamp out racism

The Football Association has responded to criticism from Middlesbrough striker Mido and has vowed to take action against racist chanting. Egypt international Mido was allegedly subjected to Islamophobic taunts from Newcastle fans during last weekend's Tees-Tyne derby at The Riverside. The incident was a repeat of the verbal abuse the 25-year-old suffered in the same fixture last season, and on Wednesday the former Tottenham player slammed the FA for failing to act in 2007/08. But English football's governing body has answered Mido's concerns by insisting it is fully committed to tackling racism. "We condemn any racist or Islamophobic behaviour and are committed to working with our clubs and the police to stamp it out," said a spokesman for the FA. "We have an on-going investigation into the incidents on Saturday and are awaiting reports from Middlesbrough and Newcastle. "As always, the priority is to identify the individuals involved and take the strongest possible action against them. "We fully support banning orders for anyone convicted of racist chanting."
