Carl Dickinson admits he had no complaints with Stoke City manager Tony Pulis' decision to free him for a move to Watford.
The 24-year-old signed a three-year deal with the Championship club after spending nine years at the Britannia Stadium.
The left-back, who graduated through the Academy, admitted he had no option but to leave as he wanted the chance of regular first-team football.
And he made his decision following a heart-to-heart with Pulis on the recent pre-season trip to Austria.
Move on
"I just want to play football, that's the only reason I'm going," said Dickinson.
"I had a chat with Tony in Austria and he said he couldn't see me playing. I said I think we need to move on and he said he would let me go.
"I thank him for that and for everything else because he's the one who gave me the chance to play at Stoke.
"So I've got nothing but good comments for Tony, but there comes a time to go.
"I think I had a good rapport with the fans and I'll be sad to leave them because I honestly think they are the best fans I've ever seen.
"But everybody in and around the club has been nice to me over the years and I thank them for that."
