The reigning European champions, who suffered the indignity of being the first UEFA Champions League holders to be knocked out in the group stages, travel to Manchester City on Sunday knowing that a win could move them to within a point of Roberto Mancini's men.
Mata, who has arguably been Chelsea's standout player this season, knows that despite enduring a tumultuous campaign so far, they can still finish the season with their heads held high.
"We are closer than it looks," he told the Sunday Telegraph.
"We are four points behind Manchester City, and with a game against them, now is the time to try and win as many games as we can.
"There is still the possibility of two trophies and finishing in the top two of the Premier League, and I think we can do it."
The Spaniard has already achieved a great deal of success since his arrival from Valencia just 17 months ago but he insists he is only concerned with the future and will not dwell on what he has already achieved.
"Last season winning the Champions League and the FA Cup, followed by the European Championships with Spain was almost the perfect year," he added.
"But I am still young, and want to win as much as I can. I can't stop to think 'I have won this and that'. I want to win again."
