Will Tottenham’s Harry Kane break Alan Shearer’s Premier League goalscoring record?
Harry Kane’s hat-trick for Tottenham against West Brom took the striker to 13 goals for the season and 62 for his Premier League career.
With Kane still only 23 years old, there is time to add plenty more to that tally yet. So can the Spurs forward become the top scorer in the competition’s history?
Thierry Henry believes it is possible. Speaking on Monday Night Football, the Arsenal legend did not rule out Kane surpassing Alan Shearer’s tally of 260 Premier League goals.
“I think he can do it,” said Henry. “Why not? It is possible. Everything that is going to happen in his life from now on needs to be right in order for him to beat the big man, Alan Shearer.
“It is doable and I think he can do it.”
Jamie Carragher is less certain of Kane adding another 199 goals to his total – an average of 20 a season for the next decade – but feels second spot is well within his reach.
Wayne Rooney is currently Shearer’s closest rival with 194 goals and counting but Carragher rates Kane’s chances of overtaking his England team-mate.
“I think he will definitely be second at the end of his career,” Carragher told Monday Night Football. “He takes penalties.
“I think in his peak years, which you would think would be from 25 to 29, he would have to have seasons where he is getting 30 league goals.”
Kane is not far off the pace to reach that figure this season and Carragher is tipping him to be the Premier League’s top scorer for 2016/17.
“I'm going for Kane,” he added. “I actually said Kane at the start of the season. I think he's in top form and he's a top striker."
However, Henry is also sticking with his pick from the outset, 14-goal Zlatan Ibrahimovic. “I called Ibrahimovic at the start of the season and I'm not going to change,” said Henry.
