Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal insists that Memphis Depay, Wayne Rooney, Anthony Martial and Marouane Fellaini are not certain to start in the Champions League on Wednesday.

United host PSV Eindhoven, Depay's former club, and can seal their place in the knockout stages with a third Group B victory.

Depay showed signs of a return to form by impressing and scoring in United's win at Watford on Saturday, but Rooney missed out through illness, and Fellaini and Martial were injured.

Louis van Gaal says Manchester United's players must prove their fitness before returning.

All four players are in contention to feature at Old Trafford but Van Gaal insists no one automatically returns unless he decides they are fit enough.

"I am a coach that always demands not only one match [to prove themselves] but several matches," Van Gaal said.

"It is always the same procedure. I compare players and the ones I think are best in our game plan, they shall play.

"Rooney will not automatically regain his place in the team. I always compare players with each other and I take into account how fit they are, and how fit they show it in the training sessions.
