Lous van Gaal talks to Geoff Shreeves about the race for fourth, what Champions League qualification means to Man Utd and his progress since he arrived

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal admits that the club has failed to meet his targets this season.

The Red Devils could finish outside the top four in the Premier League if they fail to beat Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Van Gaal's side also have to rely on cross-city rivals Manchester City losing away at Swansea on the same day, if they are to finish in the Champions League places at the end of the season.

United failed to make it through the group stage of the Champions League and also suffered Europa League defeat at the hands of arch-rivals Liverpool in the last 16 of the competition in March.

Speculation continues to surround Van Gaal's future at Old Trafford and the 64 year-old Dutchman admits that his side have failed to live up to his expectations this season.

"I am not at the level that I expected to be because I have said we have to be in third position now in the Premier League and we are not at this moment," said the United boss.

"And we cannot reach that either because we can only finish fourth and now if Manchester City lose and we win, we still have to play matches to qualify ourselves (for the Champions League) next season."

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal admits attacking failings this season

Van Gaal admits United have not reached his expectations this season

"Most of the criticism from the media was about our defence and now it is about our attack so it is also confirming what I am saying.

"We have tried to do our best - the players, the manager and his staff. But this season we didn't reach a level where we scored more goals so we need to do that. We have to also changed players."
