Paul Scholes has admitted he can understand how Darren Fletcher must feel after the Scottish midfielder was ruled out of the UEFA Champions League final.
Fletcher will be suspended for the clash with Barcelona at the end of the month after being shown a red card against Arsenal on Tuesday.
Scholes suffered the same disappointment in 1999 when, along with Roy Keane, he was banned for the dramatic victory over Bayern Munich.
And the 34-year-old appreciates the heartbreak his team-mate must have experienced when he was sent off at Emirates Stadium.
"It's not a nice feeling when you have to sit there and watch the final," Scholes said in
The Times.
"It's the biggest game of your life and everyone wants to be playing, so it's desperately disappointing if you can't."
United have no right to appeal against the decision to dismiss Fletcher, even though he appeared to win the ball with a good challenge on Cesc Fabregas.
Scholes added: "If you look at the replays of the incident, you can clearly see he got the ball.
"Even if he did make the foul, we were 4-0 up on aggregate with 10 minutes to go. It seemed a bit harsh."
