Dwight Yorke believes Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat at PSV Eindhoven may serve as a ‘wake-up call’ to Louis van Gaal and his players.
United's manager called on his players to get off to a good start on their return to the Champions League but goals from Hector Moreno and Luciano Narsingh cancelled out Memphis Depay's opener to hand the Dutch side all three points.
United, who also lost England defender Luke Shaw to a double leg fracture, dominated with 67 per cent possession but Yorke insists his former club need to be more clinical in front of goal if they want to progress in the Champions League.
This will probably be a wake-up call. At this level of the competition you need to take your opportunities and they haven't been able to do that tonight.
"I think they played well enough to certainly come away with a result," the former Manchester United striker told Sky Sports.
"I'm sure this will be a massive blow to the United players. To dominate the game for such a long period of time and to not have taken the opportunity and let PSV back into the game, they will be absolutely devastated."
"Call it naive but at this level you cannot afford to make the mistakes they have made and they paid the price," he added.
"This will probably be a wake-up call. At this level of the competition you need to take your opportunities and they haven't been able to do that tonight.
"United dominated from start to finish and with the ball possession stats I have in front of me they have done enough to come away with a point. To come away with nothing at all that will be a double blow along with losing Luke Shaw."
United's next Champions League game is against Wolfsburg, who opened their campaign with a 1-0 win over CSKA Moscow, and defeat would leave Van Gaal's men six points adrift of the Bundesliga side.
And when asked if the clash at Old Trafford later this month could prove crucial to United's chances of qualifying for the knockout stages, Yorke said: "Absolutely. That's why it was so vital they got off to a very good start in this competition.
"If you look at Van Gaal's record at PSV it's not one that he's very proud of and that seems to have continued.
"Sometimes managers have that sort of record when they go to a certain stadium. Whatever they do they can't seem to come away with a result and it proved that again tonight."
