John Terry says Chelsea's poor start to the season is merely a 'poor run of form' and is convinced manager Jose Mourinho remains the 'best man for the job.'

In an interview with the Daily Mail, the Blues skipper says the club were correct to back their Portuguese boss despite the side being in the bottom half of the Premier League table.

The 35-year-old said: "What the club have done is set a precedent and said he's the man to take us forward. He will do.

"This squad of players won the league last season. There is no difference. It's a bad run of form. Really bad.

"When you have been at the top for so long, it's horrible. You don't want to go out after games, you don't want to show your face in public. It's that level."

However, he admits he does not know how long he will remain at Chelsea where his contract expires next summer.

Asked about next season, the former England skipper added: "I don't know at the minute. I'm doing my coaching badges at the minute."

But he accepts he would not be happy staying at Stamford Bridge and just sitting on the bench: "I have never known how players can go week after week not playing.

"This is the first time in my career where I have not been a regular. I couldn't see myself doing that for a year or two years.

"But, at the same time, I couldn't even begin to think about playing for someone else. Chelsea is my club, I've been here 20 years. But America maybe."

As for being criticised this season by the press, who believe Terry is not as sharp as in earlier years, he said: "You know your legs ain't gone. It takes a little bit longer to recover.

"But when you're ready and the adrenaline pumps in, you are fine. I've never been quick."

Terry's big disappointment was not reaching 100 caps with England and, in 2012, having the national captaincy taken away from him by the FA which led to the resignation of then-manager Fabio Capello.

Terry, who announced his retirement from international football later that same year, said: "I'm still in contact with Fabio. We still speak, we text.

"How he stood up for me, given the character that he was, meant everything to me. So the way it finished saddens me, if I'm honest."
