Manchester City’s 100 per cent record in FA Women’s Super League 1 came to an end after they were held to a 0-0 draw by Liverpool at the Select Security Stadium in Widnes on Wednesday.

City had gone into the contest having claimed six straight wins and having scored 15 goals without conceding.

But it was the Reds who had the first chance of note six minutes in, when Caroline Weir latched onto a ball over the top only to shoot straight at goalkeeper Karen Bardsley.

Liverpool's Rosie White then put Shanice Van De Sanden in on goal but Lucy Bronze recovered to deny her the opportunity as the hosts enjoyed the better early moments.

City responded a minute later, however, and Siobhan Chamberlain had to be at full stretch to tip a 20-yard strike from Nikita Parris round the post.

The visitors continued to press and on 34 minutes a shot from Jane Ross was deflected wide before Toni Duggan blazed over the bar from the resulting corner.

The best chance of the match came Liverpool's way Liverpool 12 minutes from time, when White headed a corner from Laura Coombs onto the bar.

But despite six minutes of injury time, neither side managed to make a breakthrough.

In the night's other top-flight game, second-placed Chelsea moved to within four points of City - with a game in hand - by coming from behind to beat Sunderland 2-1 at Wheatsheaf Park.

The Black Cats took an early lead when Beth Mead teed up Stephanie Roche but Chelsea quickly replied as Katie Chapman headed in a Karen Carney free-kick.

Chelsea took the lead before the break when Fran Kirby headed in following some good work by Eniola Aluko and despite the Blues wasting a succession of chances in the second half to add to their tally, they held on for the win.
