Jurgen Klopp says Man City are better this year under Pep Guardiola

Jurgen Klopp believes Manchester City have made improvements under Pep Guardiola, and will pose a bigger threat to the side Liverpool beat twice in the Premier League last season.

The Premier League's two highest-scoring teams go head to head at Anfield on New Year's Eve with just a single point separating them in second and third.

City made a flying start to life under Guardiola, winning their first 10 matches of the campaign, while the Reds have shown clear signs of improvement under Klopp.

"I think it will be a little bit about how we protect our own attacks because both teams are pretty good on the counter-attack," said the German, who enjoyed 4-1 and 3-0 league victories over City last season.

"Both teams are good in possession so we have to defend at our highest level. The detail will make the difference.

"It is nice to think about what you can do in the game and what you want. We beat them last year but we lost the (Capital One Cup) final unfortunately.

"They were top of the table and we were somewhere... nowhere, so it was good. They have got better since last year but we are getting better too.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp reacted to reports linking his club with Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

"It will be a different game to last year. We cannot play like last year, they will not play like last year."

Manchester City will be boosted by the return of leading scorer Sergio Aguero after a lengthy suspension - the Argentina international has scored 16 goals in all competitions this season.

Klopp is wary of the quality Aguero possesses with Raheem Sterling, Nolito and Kelechi Iheanacho next on City's goalscoring chart with six goals each.

"I hope Pep gave him the opportunity to have three-and-a-half weeks off (during his suspension)," added the Reds boss.

"Somewhere with good weather, Argentina is good at the moment I think. He is back and a good striker, obviously.

"We have played them already and he was involved and I always thought that he is quite a talented boy, I never made a secret of it."
