Wayne Rooney announced himself on the Premier League stage with this winner for Everton against Arsenal in the 2002/03 season

There was real excitement at the start of the 2002/03 campaign that, despite being just 16-years-old, Wayne Rooney was going to light up the Premier League.

In October, Rooney was yet to cause a real stir, but that soon changed when his first Premier League goal made him an instant household name.

Everton were level with Arsenal - unbeaten in 30 Premier League games - at 1-1 as Rooney entered the fray, the game heading into the closing stages. The teenager didn't need long. In the last minute of the match, he produced an unforgettable dipping 25-yard strike which flew past David Seaman.

It was already clear the Premier League had a rare British talent on its hands.

Vote: Wimbledon 2-4 Leeds United: Yeboah hits ferocious strike, 23rd September 1995

Tony Yeboah scored a thunderbolt in Leeds' 4-2 win over Wimbledon at Selhurst Park in the 1995/96 season

Tony Yeboah made a habit of scoring sensational Premier League goals - but this wonder-strike was arguably the pick of the bunch.

After his long-range effort went in, Sky Sports' Martin Tyler eulogised: "Even by his standards, breathtakingly brilliant!"

The Leeds striker took the ball on his chest, kneed it up in the air and took it past the nearest defender, before drilling a shot into the top right-corner via the crossbar.

Talk about 'putting your laces through it'.

Vote: Stoke 2-2 Wigan: Figueroa scores audacious lob, 13 December 2009

Maynor Figueroa scored from within his own half for Wigan against Stoke in the 2009/10 season

Those who try their luck from free-kicks 60-odd yards out might be seen as brave, arrogant or simply foolish - but Maynor Figueroa had only one thing on his mind on this December day.

A quickly-taken free-kick from the Wigan full-back, just inside his own half, caught Stoke goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen completely unawares at the Britannia Stadium.

Figueroa tried to pull off the same trick, at the same ground, two years later from an identical distance out.

But he learned you only score those types of goals once.

Vote: Chelsea 2-1 Stoke: Adam produces screamer from his own half, 4 April 2015

Stoke City's Charlie Adam scores a remarkable goal from the halfway line against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the 2014/15 season

Charlie Adam had always been described by many as having a cultured left foot and this screamer of a goal showed just why.

His superb instincts to spot an opportunity to lob Thibaut Courtois from 66 yards out stunned Stamford Bridge.

Adam hit an audacious attempt from his own half as a back-pedalling Courtois was unable to stop the effort going in, the ball seemingly dropping over the scrambling goalkeeper in slow motion.

Jose Mourinho didn't seem too impressed at time but the Special One had certainly seen something special.

Vote: Liverpool 2-0 Manchester United: Gerrard slams in 35-yard piledriver, 31 March 2001

Liverpool's Steven Gerrard scores a screamer against Manchester United in the 2000/01 season

Steven Gerrard scored his first goal against Manchester United - and it was a barnstormer.

Robbie Fowler laid the ball into the path of Gerrard and from 35 yards out, he fired an unstoppable shot past Fabien Barthez.

Gerrard's long-range efforts became his trademark during his time at Anfield but this thunderbolt, at the age of just 20, was arguably his best goal in a red shirt.

It proved to be the first of many goals against the Reds' great rivals.
