Former Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert believes the signing of Christian Benteke will help Liverpool to challenge at the top of the Premier League.

Lambert signed the Belgium striker from Genk in 2012 and he went on to score 49 goals in 101 appearances for Villa.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers splashed out £32.5m to take Benteke to Anfield during the summer and he scored his first goal for his new club in the 1-0 win over Bournemouth in the second game of the campaign.

After a poor campaign in front of goal last season, Lambert thinks Benteke could be the difference and ensure that Liverpool are competing in the top four.

Brendan Rodgers felt his Liverpool side deserved more than a point following the goalless draw with Arsenal.

He told Sky Sports News HQ: "I think Brendan has a really good squad and I know last year they had a hard time because of the goalscoring aspect of it, but I said at the time when they signed Christian that could be a massive signing for them.

"I still believe that is going to happen. I think Christian has given them a big impetus and will bring out the best in Coutinho, who I think is a fabulous player, and if Liverpool keep going the way they are going they are going to be around about it.

"He's a fantastic footballer. Even when I signed him at Aston Villa he had a great belief in himself that he would score and I think it is a brilliant signing. I think he'll score goals for Liverpool.

"He makes great runs and the way he plays the game, he is a handful, and I think he'll get better and better as the season progresses."

Liverpool remain unbeaten after a 0-0 draw at Arsenal on Monday Night Football where Benteke impressed again.

He did have a great opportunity to score from close range but saw his effort saved brilliantly by goalkeeper Petr Cech.

Petr Cech put in a man of the match performance during Arsenal's goalless draw with Liverpool.

However, Lambert was impressed with his performance and said the striker looks good in possession and has an excellent touch.

"I think he gave the ball away once last night, one lay-off, that's the only time I saw," Lambert added. "He should've scored, in his own mind, he would have thought himself that he would have scored.

"But I think he will get better as the season continues and he'll be a big player for Liverpool."
