New champions still keen on Everton midfielder

Newly-crowned Russian champions Rubin Kazan are considering a swoop for Everton midfielder Stephen Pienaar in the winter transfer window. Rubin wrapped up the Russian championship with three matches still to play over the weekend with a 2-1 victory over Saturn Ramenskoe. Speculation is now mounting in Russia as to who Rubin coach Kurban Berdyev will seek to bring in to strengthen his side, in preparation for their maiden UEFA Champions League campaign next season. And Berdyev has initially picked out South Africa international Pienaar as one of his primary targets. "Last year we had talks with the South African Pienaar," Berdyev told Sport Express. "He is now at Everton, but he doesn't always play and he may be thinking about our offer." Pienaar signed a three-year contract at Everton in the summer after impressing on loan from Borussia Dortmund last season. He missed the beginning of the campaign due to a broken toe, but has started Everton's last five Premier League games. David Moyes acknowledged the midfielder's presence had been missed in the early weeks of the season and the Toffees manager would be unlikely to consider any offers for the 26-year-old.
