Royals braced for Shorey exit

Steve Coppell expects Nicky Shorey to leave Reading before the club's first game of the season.

Full-back expected to go before trip to Forest

Steve Coppell expects Nicky Shorey to leave Reading before the club's opening game of the Championship season. Shorey has been tipped to return to the Premier League this summer following Reading's relegation from the top flight. Aston Villa, Portsmouth and Sunderland have all been linked with a bid for the left-back, with Coppell confirming he had rejected an offer earlier this week. The Reading boss has not disclosed who Shorey will join, but feels the England international will have moved on from the Madejski Stadium before Reading play Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

Fresh challenge

"Without being specific about any destination, I expect Nicky to be gone by the time we kick off this weekend," Coppell told the club's official website. "There has been interest, and I expect him to be plying his trade with someone else by the time we get to Nottingham. "He's been consistent right from this time last year. "He's said he wanted to go, try a fresh challenge. We'll see what happens but I imagine he'll be gone." Meanwhile, Reading will play Celtic at the end of the season in a testimonial game for captain Graeme Murty.
