Redknapp will prove himself top boss says former skipper

Former Tottenham captain Gary Mabbutt believes Harry Redknapp will be desperate to prove he is a big-time manager at White Hart Lane. After Spurs revealed Juande Ramos has departed as head coach - along with sporting director Damien Comolli and first-team coaches Marcos Alvarez and Gus Poyet - Redknapp told Sky Sports News he had agreed to take charge. His appointment is expected to be confirmed by the club on Sunday, and he will address his new players during the clash with Bolton. His first game in charge is likely to be the north London derby with Arsenal on Wednesday - a game you can see live on Sky Sports 1. After opting to leave Portsmouth for north London, Redknapp faces a huge task to lift the squad but Mabbutt believes he is up to the task. But said: "Harry will certainly relish the job, he did a great job at West Ham and Portsmouth but he's always been hankering for a job like this. "I think he comes across very well, his style of football is very good." Another former Spurs player, Jason Cundy, added on Sky Sports News: "I'm sure there are a lot of clubs up and down the country who would love Harry's services, he was linked with the Newcastle job. "This is a massive decision for Spurs. I think Spurs fans can give a huge sigh of relief - I've no doubt Harry can go in there and sort this out. He's well respected by everyone in football. "Give (chairman) Daniel Levy his due, he's come out and made a big decision, probably the biggest he'll make in his time at Spurs.

Panic

"If they can secure the services of Harry, that's an excellent acquisition." Mabbutt, who retains close links with the club, revealed Ramos remained in favour with the board until after Thursday's poor 2-0 Uefa Cup defeat at Udinese. And he admits the exit of Ramos is indicative of a club in "panic". "I've been in touch with the Tottenham board over the last couple of weeks and they were fully supportive of Ramos up to the last few days," he said. "I believe that after eight games of the season, I think it could be a bit premature, a bit of a knee-jerk reaction. "But the board have been working far closer with the management team than I have." Mabbutt added: "Of course it's a club in panic. We're bottom of the table, two points out of 24 and we haven't won this season. "There are problems, there are concerns, and those concerns have obviously brought this decision upon the board. "They feel they can no longer keep the management team in place because they feel that by bringing in somebody else, Harry Redknapp, that will change things and hopefully get us out of this situation." Another ex-Spurs player, Graham Roberts, believes Levy was right to get rid of Ramos. "The chairman decided the other night wasn't good enough and he wants a change," he told Sky Sports News. "It was on the cards. We haven't played well, the players probably lost respect for the manager and the only way to keep your job is to win. "Martin Jol got sacked for less than this last year."
