Steve Kean hopes Tottenham can get Ryan Nelson back to full fitness after he left Blackburn and signed a short-term deal at White Hart Lane.
The New Zealand international had the remainder of his Ewood Park contract cancelled by mutual consent prior to the January transfer window closing.
Kean expected the 34-year-old to join a club in the United States in a player-coach role on a two-year deal prior to Spurs making a move.
Nelsen made one Premier League appearance for the club this season and Kean admits the defender was started to become frustrated.
Problems
"Well he was having a lot of problems with his knee," commented Kean. "I take the advice of the experts, (physio) Dave Fever and (doctor) Duncan Robertson who have been around the block.
"When a player is in such pain, he had another opportunity to see where he could get back to the level where he felt as though he could compete and compete week-in, week-out.
"He was also wanting to move into the coaching or the management side and we felt as though it was an opportunity for Ryan to do that in the next chapter of his career.
"Right at the last minute he's got the call and he's decided to go with that. So we can only say while he was here he was fantastic, but we understand the pain that he was in.
"I hope their medics can look at it and get him back on the pitch because he's found it difficult. He's only played one game in eight months. He's played little bits of reserve games. He's not played 90 minutes for a long, long time."
