Steve McClaren will not walk away from his position as Newcastle manager but has called for his side to show more fight after their 3-1 defeat to Bournemouth.
The Magpies were outplayed at St James' Park on Saturday and McClaren was subjected to chants of 'you're getting sacked in the morning' from disgruntled home supporters.
Asked afterwards if he would quit, the 54-year-old replied: "No, no way. That's for other people to decide. I don't do that.
"I have enough experience. I have been through this, I have had chants like there have been today quite a few times and that's the perils of being a manager, and especially of this team this season.
"I have had it before, it's not pleasant and I don't like it, I am as frustrated and angry as the crowd with the performance but we can't say that's it, we have to fight and solve it.
"I fully believe that what myself and the staff are doing is right. We need to perform better and do our jobs better. We have a lot of players injured and a makeshift back four. We are not having the best of luck but you make your luck by working harder."
The defeat leaves Newcastle in the relegation zone with 10 games of the season remaining.
"The poorest thing was on the ball," said McClaren. "We are normally very good on the ball but we only had a few players - Rob Eliott, Daryl Janmaat, Jack Colback and certainly Jonjo Shelvey - showing the character we need to get out of this.
"We have 10 games to go and play everybody around us. It's a four-team league and it's still only one point so we need to fight, but we can't play like that.
"The performance was not good enough. On Wednesday [against Stoke] we showed good organisation and fight and we wanted to produce that again, but it was an edgy start.
"There was a lack of discipline and the team got stretched, Bournemouth took advantage. We were unlucky with the deflection and after that we wanted to press and didn't follow so we became ill-disciplined."
