Mike Ashley speaks to Sky News

Newcastle owner Mike Ashley says the club are stuck with him even if they are relegated to the Championship.

The Magpies, whom he bought in 2007 for £134m, are in a perilous position with eight Premier League games remaining, three points adrift of safety.

In a rare interview with Sky News, Sports Direct owner Ashley insists new manager Rafa Benitez is the right man to try and keep them up but he will not sell if the worst is realised.

"I've got no choice - I went into Newcastle like Sports Direct - they've got me and I've got them. That's just the way it is," he said.

"[The situation] is disappointing, because I personally want to win every game at Newcastle United. It doesn't matter who we're playing - it doesn't matter if it's a friendly.

"I wanted us to win [against Sunderland] and I'm a little disappointed. But it's not a disaster.

"I think we've got the right man in the job. If there's any chance of us staying up - let's hope Rafa can do the business and keep us up."
