Manuel Pellegrini has hailed the performances of Sergio Aguero who, he says, could still end the season as the Premier League's top scorer.

The Manchester City manager says he cannot understand why the Argentinian has only once been shortlisted for the PFA Player of the Year award, while never being selected for the Premier League's team of the season.

The 27-year-old moved to the Etihad Stadium from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2011 and has now netted 99 Premier League goals from 146 appearances.

He banged in a hat-trick at Chelsea on Saturday which took his league tally for the campaign to 21.

This is three short of Harry Kane's current total, and one less than Jamie Vardy, despite spending fewer minutes on the pitch than either player.

Aguero won the Premier League's Golden Boot last season with 26 goals and his manager feels he can make it back-to-back awards.

The Chilean said: "He has scored an important amount of goals so he is fighting to be the top scorer in this year also.

"The way that he is playing, especially the last game, I am sure that it will be difficult for the other strikers to keep up with his performances."

Manuel Pellegrini dismisses the idea that Manchester City lost focus when Pep Guardiola was picked as their next manager

As for being nominated just once in five seasons for the main PFA award, Pellegrini added: "I don't vote so it's difficult for me to know why in four years he's never been among the best players.

"I don't know who chooses the best players or what the different reasons might be.

"In other seasons maybe people didn't vote for him because of the injuries but he has demonstrated in every game that he deserves to be in."

Aguero can bring up his century of league goals against Newcastle, at St James' Park, on Tuesday.
