Manchester City should sell Yaya Toure and Stevan Jovetic, says Phil Thompson

Phil Thompson believes Manchester City need to sell Yaya Toure and Stevan Jovetic in the summer so they can start rebuilding their squad.

Toure was named City’s Player of the Season last year but has been largely disappointing this campaign.

City have also struggled to live up to expectations and could be fourth by the time they face Crystal Palace on Monday Night Football.

Speaking on Soccer Saturday, Thompson says they must make changes in the summer, including selling Toure, who has been linked with a move to Roberto Mancini’s Inter Milan.

“They have to change something, there has to be a different way,” he said. “Yaya Toure has been a fantastic player for the Premier League but I think with Man City too much goes through him, too much is reliant on him and he has not really done it this year.

“I think they do need to change and if they get decent money for Toure and Jovetic they should snap the (buyers’) hands off. They have to rebuild because they are all too old.”

Jovetic is one of the younger members of City’s squad at 25 but has failed to make an impact since signing from Fiorentina in 2013.

“He has not done it for me and wasn’t in the Champions League squad after January,” said Thompson. “We have seen in the papers the last few days about a lot of English going out of the football club, they need to change that. I think the sell-by date is up on these two guys.”
