Manuel Pellegrini spoke to Saturday Night Football after Manchester City's defeat to West Ham

Manuel Pellegrini blamed Manchester City’s 2-1 home defeat to West Ham United on a lack of concentration and composure.

The Premier League leaders went into the game having won all their games and not conceded a goal in domestic competition so far this season.

However, they fell 2-0 behind to a 20-yard shot from Victor Moses and then a scrambled Diafra Sakho goal from a corner.

Kevin De Bruyne pulled one back just before the break, but despite having 27 attempts at goal and 72 per cent of the possession, City could not force an equaliser.

Pellegrini told Sky Sports: "This is football and you need to score to win. We conceded two easy goals in the first half - one shot at the edge of the box and one corner. We must be more concentrated because we know this team are a danger in those kind of balls.

"After we conceded the goals, we played against the score, against time, against the rivals, against everybody, and that's why I think we played too fast.

"In the second half, we were too rushed because you must be more calm to finish the best way, but when you are two goals down, it's difficult."

Pellegrini was dealt a blow when David Silva was injured in the warm-up and had to be replaced in the starting line-up by Jesus Navas, but he said the late change was not a factor in the defeat.

He added: "No excuse about that. We have other players. He cannot play, but we have other players who must do it."

Slaven Bilic said fighting spirit was the key to West Ham's win

Having seen West Ham beat both Arsenal and Liverpool already away this season, Pellegrini was well aware of their threat but said his players didn't follow the pre-match brief.

He added: "I don't want to start talking about if it was a corner or not a corner. We know that this team are dangerous at set pieces and they scored one goal in a set piece.

"We knew before the game that they have good players who can shoot at the edge of the box, and they scored one goal from the edge of the box."
