Wigan hope to win race for Hibs star

Skysports.com understands Wigan have made an enquiry for Hibernian defender David Murphy. Murphy is looking to secure a move away from Easter Road during this month's transfer window and has set his heart on a switch back to England. The former Middlesbrough man has established himself as one of the best full-backs in Britain and he has attracted interest from the likes of Wigan, Birmingham, Celtic and Rangers. Wigan are hoping to steal a march on their rivals by making an approach for Murphy's services. Steve Bruce has made a new left-back one of his top priorities as he has been forced to play Kevin Kilbane in defence since his arrival at the club and the Latics boss is believed to be a big admirer of Murphy. Murphy's agent Willie McKay confirmed Wigan had made a move for the 23-year-old. "I understand Wigan have made an enquiry to Hibs for David Murphy," McKay told skysports.com. "Steve Bruce is a big fan of David's and we will see what happens with the enquiry."
