Big freeze frustrates Holloway

Seasiders boss tired of cold snap

Ian Holloway admits it has been like 'Groundhog Day' at Blackpool as the cold weather wreaks havoc. The Seasiders have been hit hard by the freezing conditions, with three of their games in December forced to be postponed. A lack of undersoil heating at Bloomfield Road has cost them dear, with ground staff unable to get the pitch playable. That has led to glamour ties against Manchester United, Tottenham and Liverpool being called off and Blackpool facing a fixture pile-up. Holloway is growing increasingly frustrated at being unable to get his side out on the field, with even training sessions being disrupted by the snow and ice in the North West.

Surfaces

He said: "It's like Groundhog Day; we've had three cancellations now. The first everyone played and we didn't. "We are trying to train athletes in this weather but it is ridiculous. "Where would you put a racehorse in weather like this? We're tried training on the beach and even that was frozen. "We've been indoors but the clever thing is we are monitoring what has happened to our lads after we have used certain surfaces. "Last year we got two or three injuries by repeating the same surface so we are trying to swap it around and it won't cause a problem for their bodies."
Backlog
Defender Craig Cathcart is among those to have been left kicking his heels over recent weeks and he admits he cannot wait to return to action at Sunderland on Tuesday. "We just want a game now but either way we go into the New Year in a good league position and playing well," he said. "I wouldn't say a fixture backlog is a worry because we go into every game thinking we can win it. "We will look at games in hand as three points to win but you definitely want to play every week as a footballer because a two-week break can give you a lack of fitness - although maybe a break might do us good. "Over Christmas you want to be playing as much as you can but when you play Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday, the Tuesday games take a lot out of you because you only get one or two days to recover."
